World Avenue: free Monopoly-style board game online with 15 world cities

World Avenue is a board game about buying streets, building and trading, where you travel through the world's most famous cities. If you're looking for a free online Monopoly-style game, here you get the same thrill of buying property, collecting rent and bankrupting your rivals, with its own boards, cards and rules. It's free, runs on your phone and computer with nothing to install, and you can play online with friends, in a quick match or against bots offline, with 2 to 6 players.

The 15 cities

Each board is a real city with its streets under their local names, from humble neighborhoods to luxury avenues: New York (from Fordham Road to Fifth Avenue), Los Angeles (Rodeo Drive), Mexico City (Paseo de la Reforma), Buenos Aires (Avenida Alvear), Rio de Janeiro (Ipanema), London, Paris (Avenue des Champs-Élysées), Rome, Barcelona (Passeig de Gràcia), Madrid (Gran Vía, Calle de Serrano), Lisbon, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Dubai and Sydney. The airports, stations and ports are the real ones too.

Game modes

  • Online with friends: create a room, choose the city and the rules, and share the code; 2 to 6 players (bots fill the empty seats).
  • Quick match: join other people; if no one else turns up within 20 seconds, bots complete the table.
  • Against bots: 1 to 5 opponents on easy, medium or hard. It works offline and you can continue the game later.

Goal and end of the game

You start with 2,000 and collect 250 every time you pass Takeoff. Buy streets, complete color groups, build and collect rent. You can choose how the game ends:

  • Net worth (default, about 30 minutes): the first player to end their turn with a net worth equal to or above the target wins (6,000 with 4 players; 4,700 with 2). If no one gets there in 35 rounds, the highest net worth wins.
  • Rounds: after 25 rounds, the highest net worth wins.
  • Bankruptcy: the classic game, until only one player is left.

Your net worth is your cash plus the price of your properties (40% if they're mortgaged) and everything you've built.

Your turn

  1. Roll the dice and move. With doubles you roll again; a third double in a row sends you to Passport Control.
  2. Unowned street: buy it at its price or let it go to auction.
  3. Owned street: pay the rent (nothing if it's mortgaged).
  4. Before or after rolling you can build, mortgage and propose trades. End your turn whenever you like.

Each turn has a clock (45 s, 90 s or no limit) that only resets when you roll. If it runs out, a bot plays for you until you touch the screen again.

Auctions

If the player who lands on an unowned street doesn't buy it, everyone bids on it at once: bid +10, +50 or +100, or drop out. Each bid restarts a short 8-second clock; dropping out is final and the highest bid wins. With 2 players, the Agency opens the auction at half the price.

Rent and buildings

Own every street in a color group and the unbuilt rent doubles, and you can put up apartments (up to 4) and then a skyscraper, always building evenly across the group. The bank has 36 apartments and 10 skyscrapers. Transport pays more the more of it you own (30, 70, 140 and 260) and services charge 5 or 12 times the dice. Tap any space to see its card: price, rent at each level, building cost, mortgage and owner.

Mortgages, debts and bankruptcy

Mortgaging a property gives you 60% of its price; lifting the mortgage costs 15% more. If you owe more than you have, raise the cash by selling buildings and mortgaging, or use auto-pay. You only go bankrupt if even selling everything isn't enough: your properties go to whoever you owed.

Trades

On your turn you can propose a trade to another player with streets, cash and Express Visas. They can accept, decline or make you a counteroffer (up to two per negotiation). So that no one can decide the game by giving everything away, neither side can be worth less than a fifth of the other.

Passport Control and cards

You go to Passport Control if you land on Expired Passport, because of a card or with three doubles. To get out, roll doubles, pay 60 or use an Express Visa; on the third try you pay and leave. While detained you still collect rent. Ticket cards move you around the board and Postcard cards bring money, expenses and surprises.

House rules

Optional: jackpot in the middle (taxes and fines go to the Lookout and whoever lands there takes them) and perfect landing (landing right on Takeoff pays double).

Tips

  • Complete a group as soon as you can: that's what lets you build and collect big rents.
  • Cheap groups are completed sooner; expensive ones charge more but cost more to build up.
  • Keep cash for your rivals' rents and negotiate: a good trade wins games.
