Free online chess against the computer or a friend

Chess by FizzPlays is a free online chess game you can play in your browser, on your phone or on your computer, with nothing to download and no sign-up. Play the computer at five levels, from a beginner that makes mistakes to a master that thinks deeply, or play 2-player chess with a friend on the same device. The board is 3D wood with toy pieces that slide and hop.

How to play

  • Tap a piece to see its legal moves: dots are empty squares and rings are captures. Tap the target square or drag the piece there.
  • Each piece moves its own way: the king one square; the queen any distance straight or diagonally; the rook straight; the bishop diagonally; the knight in an L shape, jumping over pieces; the pawn moves forward one square (two on its first move) and captures diagonally.
  • You win by checkmate: the enemy king is attacked and has no way out.

Special rules

  • Castling: move the king two squares towards a rook and the rook jumps to its other side. Only if neither has moved, the squares between are empty and the king is not in check or crossing attacked squares.
  • En passant: if an enemy pawn moves two squares and lands next to yours, you may capture it as if it had moved one, but only on the very next move.
  • Promotion: a pawn that reaches the last rank becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight — your choice.
  • Draws: stalemate (no legal moves and no check), insufficient material, the fifty-move rule and threefold repetition.

Levels, help and clock

  • Five levels: Beginner, Novice, Casual, Expert and Master. Start at level 1 and move up when you win.
  • Undo is unlimited on levels 1 and 2 and in 2-player games. A hint shows the computer’s best move.
  • Optional clock (10 min, 5 min or 3 + 2), move list, statistics per level and an autosaved game you can continue any time.
